The Bible says that in Matthew 9:36-38 – When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Out of this concern, this message is titled “Why the workers into His harvest do not come?” We will consider three key points on this issue. Let’s explore them one by one.
Wrong Knowledge of the Master
In Matthew Chapter 25, we read about the wicked and lazy servant, who blamed the master for his fault. We read that in verses 24-25, “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’”
When we do not know who our Master is in the right way, we are less likely to work for Him ourselves or encourage our children to do so.
Lack of vision of the future
Moses was in Pharaoh’s palace; the Bible says about him in Hebrews 11:26, “He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.”
Those who lack a vision of the future do not put their necks under His yoke to serve Him. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”
A Life without God’s Concern
The question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” continues to resonate today. It reflects the voice of the guilty who failed to show concern for his own brother. Jesus calls us to be brothers and sisters and to love one another and care for the lost sheep who are not yet with Him. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:14, “For the love of Christ controls us…” We face a choice between two masters: God and the devil (money). Unfortunately, as the Bible warns, “the love of money is the root of all evil.”
The world needs the gospel. Many people are harassed and helpless (anyone without Christ!), like sheep without a shepherd. The right knowledge of God empowers us to take risks. Recognizing the transience of this life and the promise of eternal life with God helps us develop the right understanding and make informed choices. When we are connected to God, His love flows through us, motivating us to make disciples of all nations.
Though two thousand years have passed, the gospel has reached many villages in the South but has made only limited progress in North India. We should know our Master in the right way! We need to acknowledge our own limitations and grasp the reality of eternity. Only then will God’s love constrain us to engage in missions
